These patterns are extremely useful, particularly for getting up or down the neck from one position to another. Working these up to "shred" speed in the most commonly used keys requires alot of practice time, but pays huge dividends in accuracy and finger dexterity... not to mention the fact that it sounds very impressive as well!

Hey my name is Jonte and ive been playing for 5 years. I know my modes but i don't know how they're used in even simple 3 chord progressions. For example, i'm in the key of E minor and i'm playing along to a Em, A and G progression. Do i just have to use the root or third of each mode during a solo?

A very nice tutorial. If I asked for anything else to help, it would be to show the tabs of each pattern at some point during the video, maybe the end so when we go to practice, we get all the notes right, and we dont have to keep playing the portion of our video, and put down our guitar. This one wasnt that bad because you can hear it a bit, but on some of the more complex patterns it might be very helpful to make sure the patterns are right.

Bob,
these mode video's are great! Much like most other guitarist' ive been playing for @ 25 years with a very small grasp of modes and theory and did really well with just the penatonic minor (blues box) which is also a great starting point for people just starting to play lead.Well there's only so long you can whip a dead dog and i burned out and put down my guitar..only to start playing drums, well a few yrs later i was a really good drummer, playing in many bands then i started playing bass now im playing bass in bands but i never could quit my guitar and i think it was the other instruments that tied it all together for me and then i found your video and i'd never thought to use the modes horizontally with two strings that made it alot simpler and easier to grasp BRILLIANT its funny how theory seems impossibile to fathom but as you learn you see that its easier than you could imagine... i'd like to see a circle of 5th's and a cycle of 4th's video's or may be a lead lick's video (always lookin' for new chops) or just keep makin videos and i'll be watchin em...... thanks........................ jes

whats doin man? I been tryin to understand modes for quite some time now and just dont understand, i figured if i learned the major scale in every key(patterns of course) i could just move them around and therefor be playing the different modes. for instance if i were to be using a Emin7 chord as root i could just jump back a whole step and play the D major scale and that would in turn be the dorian mode, and i got that by theroy. hence "Em" is the second chord(or note) in D major. do i have the right idea and is this in fact true that by finding the note in whatever major scale will give me the different modal feeling? please explain this if i am wrong because i watched vid after vid and read book after book and it seems to be more and more confusing every time. thanks man and keep shreddin!!!

Hi Bob,
I've been watching your vids since Christmas 2007. For 30 yrs, I picked out patterns and practiced them. I figured... it doesn't matter what they are if they sound good right? Well, that only took me so far. A 20 year rutt.
I've been teaching regular guitar theory, ya know... book 1 and book 2, to kids, for years. When I found your vids, lastly, the major scale connection modes... my brain exploded. I'm finally beginning to understand... and I must give your teaching abbilities much of the credit. Thanks again Bob, for the great stuff.
                       Peace,
                       Ed Dana (Ohio)

Sup Bob!,

Liked the lesson even though my playing sucks. My own fault but, with this lesson I hope to change that. I know so much theory it is unreal for someone that cant play. I even unlocked more today, and with this lesson I hope to unluck more. I think I am with JAIRO about picking out progressions or how to use them. I am self taught so every little bit helps.

                           Thankx again BOB,
